The SRU is a highly specialist stroke-specific rehabilitation unit providing expert support and intervention for adults of all ages who have had a stroke. The focus is on enabling stroke patients to return to being as active and involved in their daily lives as possible.
SRU is led by our stroke rehabilitation consultants alongside an expert therapy team who specialise in providing longer-term rehabilitation. The team includes dietitians, doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and speech and language therapists. The ward are also visited on a weekly basis by our Stroke Ambassadors – who are stroke survivors themselves.
The multi-disciplinary team supports stroke patients and their families/carers to:
- Identify goals that they want to work towards during their SRU stay. The team develop and provide individual and personalised treatment approaches to achieve these goals. These are based on assessments of each patient’s physical, sensory, cognitive, perceptual, language, speech and swallowing problems. The team offers a range of treatment possibilities using specialist equipment, individual and group therapy and access to technological resources.
- Help manage longer-term stroke problems.
- Plan and prepare for leaving hospital.
Each patient will receive a patient handbook on the ward which provides them with additional information for their stay on the SRU, and is a place to keep the goals record sheets and additional information / advice.
We continually work to ensure that patients and their relatives feel supported and well informed during their stay with us. This is usually via update meetings (family meetings). We also organise care planning meetings prior to leaving hospital, in order to plan next steps and the practicalities of what help or equipment might be needed.
