The main focus of HASU is to closely monitor and stabilise the medical condition of a person newly diagnosed with a stroke. HASU is led by stroke specialist consultants supported by a multi-disciplinary team including stroke specialist dietitians, nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and speech and language therapists.
The team carry out specialist assessments to establish whether any further medical, nursing or therapy support is required. The team will also consider whether this needs to be provided within the hospital or in the community. Patients are usually monitored on HASU for up to the first 72 hours following their stroke. Patients needing further assessment and support at this early stage are likely to be transferred to the Acute Stroke Unit.
