Leeds Teaching Hospitals’ Stop Smoking Service aims to help smokers abstain from smoking during their hospital stay and support them to quit smoking for good.
The Stop Smoking Service supports both inpatients and maternity patients who wish to stop smoking.
Inpatients are supported across 42 wards including those receiving care in our Cardio-Respiratory, Abdominal Medicine & Surgery, Speciality & Integrated Medicine, Trauma & Related Services and Oncology clinical service units.
Hospital inpatients will be offered free nicotine replacement therapies (NRT) and have access to specialist support while in hospital. Support will continue through community-based stop smoking services when patients leave hospital.
All maternity patients are supported from across Leeds and are offered a range of face-to-face or virtual consultations. All maternity patients will be supported throughout their pregnancy by one of our dedicated Advisors.
By choosing the support that’s right for you, you’ll boost your chance of stopping.
Why a Stop Smoking Service in Hospital?
Smoking increases the risk factors for a range of illnesses and diseases including heart disease, COPD, asthma, stroke and cancer. Supporting people to stop smoking reduces those risk factors.
Helping patients to stop smoking while they are in hospital is better for the patient who smokes, and it’s better for the NHS – by reducing future demand on our services.
Stopping smoking also increases your body’s ability to heal from illness, injury or surgery, meaning if you stop smoking, you improve your chances of getting better quicker.
We know that many smokers want to stop smoking but need support to start their smoke free journey. That’s why we have a team of trained Stop Smoking Advisors who can support patients in hospital as well as referring patients onward to stop smoking support in the community when they are discharged.
