Test not routinely available without discussion with the Duty Biocohemist (x26922 option 2). Vitamin B1 (thiamine) is a water-soluble vitamin. Results are not available on an urgent basis and treatment must not be delayed whilst awaiting a result. Very low levels of thiamine may be associated with beriberi. Severe acute deficiency superimposed on a chronic deficiency may cause cerebral beriberi (Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome).
