
Neonatal infections are classified as occurring before an infant is 3 months old. Infections may be contracted from transplacental transfer, perinatally during delivery or by other means after birth. There are a number of viral agents that are implicated in neonatal infection; Herpes simplex virus (HSV), Adenovirus, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein Barr Virus (EBV), Varicella zoster virus (VZV) and enterovirus.

EDTA samples are required. Faeces samples may be tested for the presence of enterovirus only.
