Serological assays for SARS-CoV-2 detect the immune response of the body to the infection caused by the virus by determining the presence of antibodies in the blood rather than the virus itself. Unlike other methods which can detect the genetic material of the virus, and thus the presence of the virus, antibody tests could potentially help determine whether an individual was ever exposed to the virus, despite showing any COVID-19 symptoms or not.

Additional Information
At present, correlates of immunity from SARS-CoV-2 infection are not well defined. Until more data is available, positive serological assays cannot be used as indicative of existence of protective immunity against SARS-CoV-2 or as a sole-method for the diagnosis of COVID-19 disease.
