A class of alcohol soluble proteins found in the gluten of wheat, barley, rye and pat grains, Gliadin antibodies are found in patients with coeliac disease as well as other gluten sensitive enteropathies (e.g. dermatitis herpetiformis) although they are not specific. Gliadin antibodies can also be found in other bowel disorders such as Crohn’s Disease.

Additional Information
Not recommended as a screening test for Coeliac disease. Please refer to Coeliac screen/Anti-tTG Ab entry. Tissue transglutaminase and anti-endomysial antibodies are now preferred tests over gliadin antibodies in the diagnosis of gluten sensitive enteropathy due to their higher sensitivity and specificity. The test results must be used in conjunction with all relevant clinical symptoms and results and are not diagnostic when used in isolation.
