At Leeds Dental Institute we also provide treatment with inhalation sedation (“gas and air” or “happy air”) and general anaesthetic (operation or very deep sleep), for children and young people who can’t manage with local anaesthetic alone (injection in the gum). The Chapel Allerton unit has 5 separate surgeries which are quieter and calmer for patients / carers with sensory issues.
We see dental emergencies referred to us by health or social care colleagues, or self-referrals. Dental emergencies can include children with acutely swollen faces, dental trauma requiring urgent specialist management, or uncontrolled bleeding from the mouth.
We work in partnership with the University of Leeds and Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber to provide teaching to a range of students and dental professionals (dentists, hygiene therapists, nurses) and conduct clinical dental research. Dental treatment may be provided by undergraduate dental students, hygiene therapy students or postgraduate dentists (enhancing their skills in children’s dentistry), under close supervision from tutors.
We work closely with colleagues from other departments at Leeds Dental Institute, including Orthodontics, Restorative Dentistry, Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery and have joint clinics to discuss and plan more complex cases.
