St. James’s Laser Vision provides state-of-the-art laser refractive eye surgery for both NHS and private patients at a specialist unit based at St. James University Hospital in Leeds. The unit is equipped with the very latest refractive laser and associated equipment, enabling it to offer the most advanced treatments- both to private patients and to complex NHS patients.
St. James’s Laser Vision provides its’ refractive surgery service in an academic environment under close scrutiny of our peers and overseen by the authority of the NHS Trust.
All income derived from the laser service is reinvested directly into the St. James’s University Hospital’s eye department, funding the most sophisticated eye care available to NHS patients.
St. James’s Laser Vision Surgeons
Andrew J. Morrell, FRCS FRCOphth Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon
Mr. Morrell is a corneal specialist working primarily out of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He has run the regional laser service for 13 years at St. James University Hospital and one of the first surgeons in the UK to perform laser eye surgery.
Mr. Morrell was chosen among his peers to co-develop the Royal College Guidelines to Standards for Laser Refractive Surgery and he is a former Regional Director of Training for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. Mr. Morrell has performed over 2000 laser refractive procedures.
Seema Anand MB BS, MS(Ophth), DNB(Ophth), FRCS Ed(Ophth), CertLRS, PGDip Cataract and Refractive Surgery Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon
Ms Anand qualified in medicine in 1995. Since then, she has trained and worked for over 20 years in ophthalmology in eminent teaching centres in the UK and internationally.
After completing her ophthalmology training in London and Yorkshire in 2007, she moved to Australia to undertake specialist training in corneal and refractive surgery at the prestigious Flinders Medical Institute in Adelaide. On her return to the UK, Ms Anand completed a second fellowship in corneal and refractive surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.
She was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough in 2009 where she introduced several new techniques in corneal surgery. She moved to her current post at St James’s University Hospital, Leeds in 2015 where she is the lead for corneal and refractive surgery.
Ms Anand is an experienced corneal and cataract surgeon, routinely dealing with complex tertiary referrals. She holds the Royal College of Ophthalmologists certification in laser and lens based refractive surgery and has additionally obtained post graduate certification in cataract and refractive surgery from Ulster University. She is actively involved in the teaching of medical students and surgical trainees. She has been appointed as the College Tutor for ophthalmic surgical trainees at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
Ahmed Bardan CertLRS FRCOphth FRCSEd Consultant Ophthalmologist
Following basic and higher specialty training in Egypt, Mr Bardan joined the team at Sussex Eye Hospital, Brighton for a two-and-a-half-year fellowship in Cornea and Anterior Segment diseases, before being appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at St James University Hospital, Leeds.
As well as having a wide range of experience in the management of complex and challenging cataract cases, using premium and multifocal intraocular lenses, he is also an experienced laser and lens refractive surgeon.
Mr Bardan is a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, he did his Masters of Science in Ophthalmology studying the use of the new laser technology in wavefront customised refractive correction of complex eyes and obtained his PhD in Ophthalmology from Alexandria University in Egypt studying combined cataract surgery with the novel Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) techniques.
Mr Bardan is certified by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists as a refractive surgeon having obtained his certificate of laser refractive surgery.
Mr Bardan has contributed to national and international courses and workshops on cataract surgery, laser refractive surgery, immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery, anterior lamellar and endothelial keratoplasty techniques.
