Physiotherapy Service

We are a dedicated team with nearly 25 years combined experience in assessing/treating and supporting people with haemophilia and other bleeding disorders. Physiotherapy is available to both children and adults and users are actively encouraged to contact us directly for appointments or for advice.

We liaise with schools and other agencies involved with the management/care of a person with haemophilia, working as part of an extensive multi disciplinary team. Over the years we have developed close links with associated teams such as paediatric rheumatology and adult orthopaedics to provide a seamless service for our patients.

We are an active part of a three- monthly combined paediatric rheumatology/haematology clinic and 6-monthly adult haemophilia and orthopaedic clinic, in addition to running a specialist combined podiatry/physiotherapy clinic two Wednesdays every month.

Haemophilia Social Worker

Adult and Paediatric Social Workers are available to support patients as inpatients or outpatients.

The Haemophilia Social Worker works as part of the Regional Specialist Team and also as part the Haemophilia Multi-disciplinary Team, providing appropriate support to the children / young people and their families / carers who attend the Haemophilia clinic.

The Haemophilia Social worker has an understanding of how the medical condition can impact on the child / young person’s life and that of their family / carers.

Therefore his / her role is to provide emotional and practical support for the children / young people (aged 0-18 years) and their parents / carers.

A broad and flexible service is offered and sometimes an initial assessment has to be carried out to gather information in order to provide the appropriate support. This will involve talking with the parents / carers and child to identify areas where support may be needed. Other agencies / professionals who are involved with the child may need to be contacted as well.

Examples of support offered:

Support, advice and advocacy – for the child /young people and their family members / carers.
Liaison between the child / young people, their families and health professionals.
Liaison with other agencies such as housing and education.
Welfare advice – assist with applying for Disability Living Allowance, Carer Allowance and other benefits where appropriate.
Practical support – accessing funding / grants if families are undergoing financial difficulties.
Signposting to other local services / support in cases when the child and family are not Leeds residents.
Safeguarding by promoting the safety, wellbeing and development of all children. Being child focused, ensuring that the child’s voice is heard.
