What does the service offer?
Individual outpatient (and limited inpatient) assessment and psychological therapy to adult patients referred by their medical consultant across a range of medical specialities.
Patients can be referred from a wide range of specialties including:
- Diabetes and Endocrinology
- Dermatology
- Hepatology
- Rheumatology
- PMS
- Haematology (non-cancerous)
- Oral and Maxillofacial
- Respiratory
- Obstetrics and Gynaecology
- Elderly Medicine
- Urology
- Acute medicine
- Vascular
- Gastroenterology
- ENT
- Colorectal surgery
- Dental
- Andrology
- Obesity
- Audiology
- General surgery
If your health condition is not listed above, it is possible that that there is existing psychological input dedicated into that specialty within the Department of Clinical and Health Psychology or that the specialty has not previously or frequently referred to the service.
Common reasons for patient referrals include:
- Anxiety
- panic attacks
- stress
- anger
- treatment adherence
- adjustment to a new diagnosis
- impact of illness on lifestyle
- appearance-related issues/body image
- symptom management
- assessment for surgery or treatment decision-making
- managing hospital stays
- traumatic response to treatment
- eating issues
- confidence
- medical phobias
- impact of illness on relationships
- sleep difficulties
- medically unexplained symptoms.
In line with other specialties within the Department of Clinical and Health Psychology, patients’ psychological difficulties must be directly related to their health condition for referrals to be considered.
Patients have the option to attend appointments with partners/family members. It is possible that following an assessment appointment, patients may be signposted to other services if more appropriate to their needs (e.g. local community mental health services, services for more specific needs).
