The Children’s Clinical Research Team is made up of a team of 19 Research Nurses, 8 Clinical Trials Assistants (CTAs) and 1 Data Manager and is supported by the wider clinical multi-disciplinary team to deliver research across all paediatric specialities.
Research Nurses co-ordinate care for children, young people and families participating in clinical trials. This includes providing up to date information about the studies, identifying suitable participants, administering study medication or interventions such as questionnaires and carrying out other assessments in line with each of the study protocols. Research Nurses work closely with the study Principle Investigators to ensure that studies are conducted in line with national and international guidelines keeping our patients and their families at the core of what we do.
CTAs and data managers work alongside the nurses in running the studies providing clinical and administrative support, collecting and collating information about study participants and managing the follow-up of those taking part in our research.
All staff work together to ensure efficient and safe delivery of research across all children’s specialities at Leeds Children’s Hospital and beyond including set up and planning of study activity. The wide variety of studies supported by the team includes early and late phase clinical trials of medicinal products (drugs) looking at new drugs or new uses for current medicines, medical devices studies, other interventions such as non-medicinal therapy and observational studies. Studies also include long term follow up of patient outcomes, this helps clinicians detect changes and improvements in children and young people with chronic health conditions over a period of time.
The Leeds Children’s Hospital research lead is Professor Adam Glaser – Consultant in paediatric oncology and late effects medicine. Also based within the Children’s Hospital are Dr Kathryn Johnson – Consultant Neonatologist and regional network research lead for children’s research, and Dr Martin Elliot – regional lead for paediatric oncology research.
