Leeds has the largest single centre Primary PCI service across the UK and was one of the national pilot sites for this service. Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (Primary PCI) services are provided to over 1,000 patients each year admitted acutely with a heart attack.
Leeds has also developed the largest Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) service in the UK. Leeds General Infirmary also hosts the West Yorkshire Arrhythmia Service (WYAS) and a Multi-disciplinary Heart Failure service.
WYAS provides state of the art facilities for the investigation and treatment of heart rhythm disorders along with comprehensive pacemaker and defibrillator implanting service, along with a regional service for Inherited Cardiovascular Conditions (ICC).
Working closely with Primary Care GP services in Leeds we have completely revised our Heart Failure services over the last three years. Leeds GPs are now able to follow best practice NICE guidelines and refer patients in to a specialist diagnostic service.
The Adult Cardiology service has the advantage of working closely with the Leeds Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery services and with the Adult Congenital Heart Disease program which is part of the Paediatric service.
Research underpins all of our clinical services. Leeds has one of the strongest Cardiology research profiles in the UK.
Leeds is a training centre for medical students, junior doctors and doctors wishing to specialise in Cardiology. Our trainee feedback is always good and our feedback from undergraduates is very positive. Leeds provides national and regional training courses in cardiac MR, surgical skills for cardiology doctors, specialist management of arrhythmias and procedural skills such as TAVI and PCI.
