To get the most out of your hip replacement, it is important that you start your exercises before your operation. Your physiotherapists will teach you the exercises at pre-assessment, but it is your responsibility to carry out the exercises independently and regularly.
Try and do these exercises three times per day. For each exercise make sure you are holding onto a secure object e.g.: worktop/ table.
1. Stand with your feet hip width apart. Gently lift your operated knee up in front of you. Hold for a few seconds and slowly lower.
2. Stand with your feet hip width apart. Gently lift your operated leg out to the side keeping your knee straight. Hold for a few seconds and slowly lower.
3. Make sure you do not turn your foot outwards or lean to the non-operated side. Stand with your feet hip width apart. Gently lift your operated leg behind you keeping your knee straight. Hold for a few seconds and slowly lower.
4. Make sure you do not lean forwards. Stand with your feet hip width apart. Gently bend your operated knee bringing your foot towards your bottom. Hold for a few seconds and slowly lower.
