You have been allocated a lung cancer nurse specialist (also known as a Clinical Nurse Specialist/CNS). Your lung cancer nurse will support and guide you through all the tests, investigations, treatments and also with any follow up. They are your main point of contact in the hospital.
Your lung cancer nurse specialist/CNS is called:
(This box will be completed on your physical copy of the leaflet)
The lung cancer nurse specialist is a key member of the lung cancer multi-disciplinary team which consists of specialists who make recommendations about your investigations, treatment and follow up. You will also be introduced to our cancer care co-ordinator, who may also contact you.
The lung cancer nurse specialist represents your views to the rest of the team and helps to feed important information back to you when needed. All the members of the lung cancer nurse specialist team have experience, skills, expertise in assessing patient’s needs and helping you and your family with any concerns.
It is very important that you become familiar with our advice line. When you ring 0113 206 7916 you will need to leave your name, NHS number and a message on the answerphone. When you have left a message we will return your call as soon as we can. However, as we spend the majority our time seeing patients in clinics and other departments we are unable to answer the phone directly.
We check the messages throughout the day from Monday to Friday except weekends and bank holidays. Any messages left after 3:30pm are checked the next working day, so please do not leave urgent messages.
We are able to offer you:
- Information about your illness, investigations, treatments and follow up.
- Advice about any symptoms that you are experiencing.
- Support for you, your relatives and carers.
- Referral to the community nursing teams, such as the District Nurses or Palliative Care Team.
- Referral to other professionals who can offer specialist advice such as financial benefits, emotional and psychological support.
We are unable to offer:
- Home visits. However, your lung cancer nurse specialist can refer you to your local District Nursing or Palliative Care Team depending on your needs.
- Transport for appointments can be arranged by calling 0300 330 2000.
