Please check you have received the following:
Preliminary discharge letter
This letter is to be given to your GP at the earliest opportunity. It will inform the GP of what procedure you have had done and to prescribe the right medication for you.
Medication
If your medication is to be changed a doctor will inform you and a supply given for few days (sufficient until you see your GP, otherwise keep taking your tablets as normal).
Blood thinning tablets
You will need to take additional blood thinning tablets (anti-platelets) like Clopidogrel
or Ticagrelor for a specific duration of 3 to 12 months based on the procedure and stent. This will be clearly informed to you and your GP. You will be given a supply of these tablets for one month and subsequent prescriptions to be obtained from the GP. It is very important that you do not stop these tablets unless advised by the medical team.
If you are taking warfarin or similar medications (oral anticoagulation) specific instructions for individual patients will be given.
Follow-up clinic appointment
An outpatient appointment will be made for you around 6-12 weeks, depending on the procedure.
Via the wrist (Radial)
You must avoid heavy lifting/pulling pushing with the arm for 1 – 2 weeks following angioplasty. It is rare for problems to occur after discharge. We advise, you should have someone with you for the first 24 hours.
Via the groin (Femoral)
It is common to develop mild bruising or a small lump around the puncture site at the top of the leg which often gets worse before it gets better. Sometimes you may see old, dark blood oozing away which settles down soon.
- If there is persistent bleeding, apply pressure approximately 1 cm above the puncture site. Call Ward L14 (or an ambulance if the bleeding is severe)
- Report any numbness of the feet, toes or legs to Ward L14
- Report to Ward L14 if a larger lump develops in the groin
Work
Avoid heavy lifting/physical work for 2-3 days (which may mean staying off work). If your job is a heavy one, you are advised to stay off work for 2-3 days. If it is a light job, you may return earlier, but in general, patients find it more comfortable to take a few days off work
Bathing
We advise shower in preference to bathing for 2-3 days. Use cooler water and avoid harsh rubbing at the puncture site.
Driving
You may drive one week following Angioplasty.
