We recruit regularly to specifically identified roles, which are open to anyone aged 18+. All opportunities are advertised on this page, and we encourage applications from communities across the city to support the diverse volunteer workforce already in place at LTHT. Gledhow Wing St James Hospital
This role makes a really difference to those coming to the hospital, can you help?
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) is an extremely large and busy organisation with receptions areas that see thousands of patients, visitors and staff each day. We know that our hospitals can be difficult to navigate due to their size and complexity, with people often becoming lost, late, confused and anxious. Those visiting the site are often unsure who to approach to ask for information on; directions, services on sites, amenities, onwards travel and additional support.
Situated in our reception you will be the first point of contact for anyone coming to the hospital site. You will accompany anyone who is unsure of where they are going to get them safely and without delay to the area they need to be in. We will equip you with site specific knowledge, way finding skills, and knowledge about the local area, transport and amenities so you can help anyone that comes to the Trust.
We will also be offering additional training to volunteers in this role including: supporting those with additional needs, or sight or visual impairment, and wheelchair training.
We are looking for volunteers who have:
- Excellent, confident communication skills
- Good mobility as this is an active role
- Friendly and welcoming
- Happy to work as a team and support other volunteers in the same role
- Can show initiative and work independently
- Confident in approaching strangers
- Can commit to one shift weekdays 11am -3pm for at least the next 12 months.
- Minimum age of 18+
Additional skills would be welcome such as: second language, BSSL, dementia awareness, understanding of disability access needs, awareness of learning disabilities and autism, supporting those who are deaf or blind, experience of working with young people.

Are you a qualified Complementary Therapist would you be available
to volunteer at Chapel Allerton Hospital Chapeltown Road Leeds LS7 4SA.
This volunteer role will make a really difference to the patient’s experience, can you help?
The Rehabilitation ward at Chapel Allerton has patients who spend a substantial amount of time in hospital.
We are looking for a qualified Complementary Therapist to provide gentle hand and foot massage for patients residing on Ward C1 The Rehabilitation Ward.
Being in hospital can be unstimulating, isolating and can cause distress and the risk of deconditioning. We believe that massage may help promote patients’ wellbeing, provide stimulation, reduce boredom, and distress and reduce the risk of deconditioning.
What do we need
- Somebody who is a qualified professional therapist
- Minimum of Level 3 Diploma in massage therapy
- In date Registration with a professional body
- Willing to hold an Honorary Contract with The Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust
- At least 2 years’ experience including providing this type of treatment to clients/members of the public in a work or volunteering environment.
- You must be punctual and dependable and committed to attend regularly for at least 6 months / 75 hours of volunteering

The Emergency Department (ED) at St James’s Hospital is an extremely busy area that see a huge number of patients, visitors, carers and family members each day.
We know that this hospital area can be difficult to navigate due to its size and complexity, with people often becoming lost, confused, and anxious. Those visiting are often unwell, worried, and unsure of who to approach to ask for information on; directions, services on sites, amenities, onwards travel and additional support.
Situated in the main reception area in ED you will be in contact with anyone coming into the department. You will sign post people to the reception desks and then from there accompany anyone who is unsure of where they need to go to get them safely and without delay to the area, they need to be in. We will equip you with site specific knowledge, way finding skills, and knowledge about the local area, transport, and amenities so you can help anyone that comes into the department.
We will also be offering additional training to volunteers in this role including supporting those with additional needs, or sight or visual impairment, and wheelchair training.
We are looking for volunteers who have:
- At least 2 years’ experience working/volunteering with members of the public or in a patient facing role.
- Minimum Age of 21+
- Excellent, confident communication skills
- Ability to share key information in a clear and helpful manner.
- Good mobility as this is an active role.
- Friendly and welcoming
- Happy to work as a team and support other volunteers in the same role.
- Can show initiative and work independently.
- Confident in approaching strangers.
- Welcoming
- Can commit to one weekday shift 11am – 3pm for at least the next 12 months.
