If your GP is closed or you can’t get an appointment, please visit 111.nhs.uk or call 111, which will direct you to the best local service. This could be an out-of-hours doctor, an urgent treatment centre or a walk-in centre, a community nurse, an emergency dentist or a late-opening pharmacy.
A&E departments treat life-threatening emergencies such as:
- loss of consciousness
- acute confusion and fits that are not stopping
- chest pain
- breathing difficulties
- severe bleeding that cannot be stopped
- severe allergic reactions
- severe burns or scalds
- stroke
- major trauma such as a road traffic accident
