What is major trauma?
Major trauma means to suffer a life changing injury or multiple serious injuries that could cause death or serious disability. This could include people who have been in a high-speed vehicle crash, industrial accident, high fall, explosion or severe knife or gunshot wounds. Although these sorts of injuries are rare, severe major trauma remains the leading cause of death in people under the age of 30. Trauma patients occupy more hospital beds than all patients with heart diseases and four times more than patients with cancer.
Major trauma patients often suffer complex, multiple injuries that need surgical and nursing care from multiple specialists and care from many professionals such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists. This care is very important and many patients need a personalised rehabilitation programme taking many months to help them return to an active life.
Leeds Major Trauma Centre – 10 Year Anniversary
The Major Trauma Centre in Leeds is the second-busiest trauma centre in the country. We see more than 1,600 patients each year who need to care for severe or multiple injuries. Major trauma can be a life-altering event. It can be a fall from a height, a road traffic collision, or an act of violence. Without our input, some of these patients may die. From the moment the patient is picked up in the ambulance, the clock starts.
We may have as little as five minutes when the trauma call goes off to assemble. At that point, we get to where the patient needs us. Our team is as big as it needs to be, bringing together expert clinicians from multiple specialities to ensure the patient gets the very best from every aspect of their care. From their emergency treatment to their full body scanning, surgery, ward care, clinical follow-up, psychological support, and beyond, we’re here for the journey. Our patients and their families become completely dependent on the care they receive in the Major Trauma Centre. In return, we are committed to their recovery to the best of our ability. Our patients become as close as family.
Ten years ago, we used to say that major trauma was a young man’s disease. Now, the fastest-rising demographic to suffer from major trauma is in the over-65s. With an ageing population, major trauma care is needed more than ever. Day One is the charity for trauma support, providing practical and emotional support to patients and their loved ones. The blueprint was made by patients for patients here in Leeds in 2013.
Now, Day One has grown into a national charity, providing support from day one and for as long as people need us. This year, in 2023, we’re celebrating 10 years of providing life-saving care. Over the past decade, more than 92 percent of major trauma patients have survived their injuries. Major trauma care is the precision point, the cutting edge, of the NHS. It’s the absolute best because we have to be. From the Yorkshire Dales to the Humber Estuary to the Peak District and here in Leeds, we are proud to serve the people of our region and deliver life-saving care.
