Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) are chronic, non-curable conditions causing inflammation of the intestines. The two main forms are Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease. The Leeds Inflammatory Bowel Disease service supports around 3,000 patients with IBD in Leeds. We also provide a tertiary referral service for the wider West Yorkshire area.
What we do
Most of our care is delivered for outpatients. We offer two dedicated IBD (Tuesdays and Fridays) clinics at St James’s University Hospital. These clinics are all consultant led and attended by specialist IBD nurses and dietitians. For patients with stable disease we offer the option of a telephone follow-up clinic if they prefer. We hold a weekly multi-disciplinary team meeting with gastroenterologists, IBD nurses, surgeons and radiologists to discuss the care of complex patients.
In addition we offer clinics for IBD patients with more complex problems:
- joint surgical & medical clinics
- joint IBD & rheumatology clinics
- joint IBD pregnancy clinics
- transition (pediatric to adult care) clinic for adolescents
A telephone helpline (0113 206 8679) and email service is available for all our patients. Please note that the advice line is an answer-phone service and not suitable for emergencies.
Inpatients are mostly looked after on wards J91 and J92 at St James University Hospital. Endoscopy and Radiology services for patients with IBD are available at St James University Hospital, Leeds General Infirmary and Wharfedale Hospital.
