Welcome to the Cleft Lip and Palate Service
The Cleft Lip and Palate Service is one of two teams in the Northern and Yorkshire Regional Cleft Lip and Palate Service. The Leeds service looks after children and adults with a cleft of the lip and/or palate in North, East and West Yorkshire. We are based at Leeds Children’s Hospital and most of our patients are children but we also treat adults.
What we do
The service looks after infants, children and adults who were born with a cleft lip and/or a cleft palate, and those with speech difficulties associated with palate function.
Care involves several specialists from different backgrounds who work together as a multi-disciplinary team to plan future treatment, observe a child’s progress and monitor future growth and development. The specialists include a Cleft Surgeon, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Speech and Language Therapists, Clinical Psychologists, Orthodontists and Paediatric Dentists. We are also supported locally by Paediatricians, Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) Consultants, Audiologists, and Consultant Geneticists.
At key intervals patients will be seen by the team to talk about progress and treatment. These reviews and therapy are usually undertaken in local clinics, although infants are generally seen at home. If surgery is required, it is usually undertaken at our base at Leeds Children’s Hospital, LGI site.
