Welcome to Children’s Endocrinology
We provide a tertiary service for West, North and East Yorkshire with specialist outreach clinics in Bradford, Halifax, Huddersfield, Airedale, York and Northallerton.
All aspects of endocrine advice are provided including assessments and treatment of children with short stature, early and late puberty, disorders of endocrine glands (pituitary, adrenal, thyroid), Metabolic bone disease.
What we do
Endocrinology is the study of glands and hormones. Hormones are chemicals that directly regulate growth, puberty, fertility and metabolism, and support overall well-being. Deficiency or complete absence of hormones can result in poor growth, illness, and sometimes even death.
The Paediatric Endocrinology Team at Leeds Children’s Hospital support all young patients who have problems with the secretion of hormones. This could be as a result of various of genetic conditions, such as Turner, Noonan and Prader-Willi syndrome, congenital conditions such as adrenal failure, and autoimmune conditions such as thyroid problems as well as following treatment for certain types of cancer.
The team takes referrals directly from GPs, other regional hospitals and national centres. We have strong links with all other paediatric specialties in the Children’s Hospital, including oncology, surgery, renal and liver teams, as well as wider teams across the Trust such as adult endocrinology, reproductive medicine and genetics.
Leeds Children’s Hospital is also home to a Complications of Excess Weight Service which is part of our specialist centre for paediatric obesity.
Common conditions we see include:
- Short stature – assessment and treatment
- Puberty – early puberty, late puberty, normal variations
- Thyroid – underactive or overactive
- Adrenal – adrenal hypoplasia, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, adrenal suppression following steroids use, Cushing syndrome
- Genital abnormalities – indeterminate genitalia, micro-penis
- Brain – pituitary tumors, malformations including septo-optic dysplasia
- Metabolic bone disease – disorders of calcium and vitamin D, bone density, recurrent fractures
- Obesity – assessment for secondary complications and genetic causes
- Endocrine effects of childhood cancer
- Turner syndrome, MEN syndromes, excessive thirst
The Children’s Endocrine Team deliver a wide range of assessments, treatments and therapies supporting children and young people with the above (and more) conditions.
