Ointment
- Please see instructions on the tube
- Pull down the lower lid, and squeeze the ointment into the ‘well’ formed
- The ointment will make your eye ‘sticky’ and may obscure your vision for a minute or two
- If both eyes are affected – use a separate tube for each eye
- Use for at least 3 days (longer if so instructed) and throw away any remaining ointment
Local anaesthetic
This numbs the eye for:
- ease of examination
- to relieve pain
- to remove a foreign body
When this wears off, your eye may be painful. Take simple painkillers and this should settle.

Emergency Department – Eye problem not settling?
Following your attendance at A&E today, we expect the problem to settle down with the treatment you have been given. However, if it is not settling down as expected or is getting worse, then you can seek review in the emergency eye clinic.
(if unsuccessful you could try 0113 206 4737 / 0113 206 5488 / 0113 206 4835 but when the clinic is busy, it may not always be possible for these lines to be staffed).
