We know that in order to deliver excellent high quality care for our patients we need to have the very best staff working together towards the same goals.

Using the latest crowdsourcing technology, we undertook our largest staff engagement programme at the Trust to develop our vision, values and goals.

Our staff were asked to describe the behaviours and leadership they believed were needed to be the very best and achieve our vision. These were used to define what our organisation stands for and ‘how we do things here’ at Leeds Teaching Hospitals.

The strength of ‘The Leeds Way’ is that it has been created by our staff who have taken ownership of our values and ensure we live them day to day.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has been selected as one of the five Trusts to take part in the NHS Improvement Partnership working with NHS Improvement and the world-renowned Virginia Mason Institute in Seattle.

We are one of only five trusts in the UK to work with the prestigious Virginia Mason Institute on a programme we know as the Leeds Improvement Method. The partnership was announced in July 2015 against a backdrop of a system refocusing on quality improvement within tighter financial constraints in healthcare.

This is a five year partnership to support accelerated transformation in quality.

In summary, the Leeds Improvement Method:

Is the application of observation and data analysis tools, to describe how patients experience our services
Supports staff to systematically remove waste
Promotes zero defects and zero harm for patients
Uses a disciplined timeframe
Encourages participation and respect for each other as equals

Urology is one of the first areas using the Leeds Improvement Method to improve our services. Specifically, the Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) patient pathway has been improved through a succession of rapid process improvement workshops. These are weeklong workshops where a group of seven or eight staff involved in a different part of the pathway, work to improve the way the service works, with the aim of making it more effective and to improve the patient experience.

Areas that have been looked at in the rapid process improvement workshops so far are:

Urology News and Achievments

Pyrah Department of Urology

Urology is the branch of medicine which deals with conditions and diseases of the prostate, bladder, kidneys and other parts of the urinary system. We also treat conditions of the male reproductive system.

The Urology Team at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust consists of 14 full time Consultant Urologists who provide a full range of urological expertise and secondary urological care to the 750,000 residents of Leeds and it’s neighbouring towns.

We are the largest designated tertiary cancer centre in Yorkshire and provide tertiary level cancer care to Prostate, Bladder and Kidney cancer patients from the wider 1.2 million population of Leeds, Harrogate and York and we are the designated supra-regional tertiary centre for penile cancer. We are supported by a team of highly skilled Cancer and Clinical Nurse Specialists. We work in close collaboration with Medical and Clinical Oncologists, Uro-Radiologists and Uro-Patholoigsts to provide multidisciplinary approach to our cancer patients.
