What do I need to do before the test?
- There is no special preparation needed, but please let us know before the test if you are taking steroid medication.
What does the test involve?
- A blood sample will be taken and then you will be given an injection of Synacthen, this stimulates the adrenal glands to produce cortisol. Blood will be taken again 30 minutes after the injection.
- You will then be free to go.
How long will the test take?
- The test will take approximately 1/2 hour to complete.
Side-effects
- There are no side-effects with this test.
- The injection can sting and some patients experience a hot flush sensation.
When will I get the results?
- The results of your test will be reviewed by your doctor and discussed with you at your next appointment.
